Final Rule Permanently Increases the Automatic Extension Period for Certain Employment Authorization Document Renewal Applicants

The DHS has finalized a rule to extend the automatic employment authorization period from 180 days to 540 days for certain EAD renewal applicants with timely filed Form I-765. This change reduces lapses in employment authorization while applications are processed. Effective January 10, 2025, it applies to renewal applications pending or filed since May 4, 2022.

New COAs for Certain Surviving Spouses and Children of Deceased Employees of the U.S. Government Abroad

New classes of admission (COAs) have been introduced for surviving spouses and children of certain deceased U.S. Government employees abroad, following amendments to immigration law under the Emergency Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2021 (ESSAA 2021). These COAs provide lawful permanent resident status and employment authorization, with specific documentation required for verification.
